Materials, As I Know Them.

Stuff to illuminate on:

  • Parchment - Animal skin prepared for writing on
  • Vellum - Parchment specifically from calf skin
  • Pergamenata - Parchment replacement made from vegetables.
  • Watercolor Paper - You know what this is. Use hot-press for a more even surface, and use a heavier weight so it's easier to fix mistakes.

Stuff to paint with:

  • Watercolors - a paint that is mixed with water and is very transparent
  • Guache - a paint like watercolor, except more opaque.

Stuff to illuminate with:

  • Gesso - consists of a binder and typically chalk. White in color. Lays the foundation for many types of artwork. When working with gold, it is placed first and used to give the gold leaf dimension on the page.
  • Gold Leaf - Extremely thin sheets of gold
  • Gold Shell - Gold powder
